_PARA WPAR@ ` ÅTEXT ` üMorley, Margaret Warner1858╨1923biologist, educator and writer of children╒s booksBorn on February 17, 1858, in Montrose, Iowa, Margaret Morley grew up and attended public schools in Brooklyn, New York. She studied at the Oswego Normal School (now State University of New York College at Oswego) and at New York City Normal College (now Hunter College), graduating from the latter in 1878. She conducted postgraduate studies in biology at Armour Institute (now the Illinois Institute of Technology) in Chicago and at the Woods Hole, Massachusetts, marine laboratory. She then embarked on a career of teaching, which took her to Oswego Normal, to the State Normal School (now part of the University of Wisconsin╨Milwaukee) in Milwaukee, to a high school in Leavenworth, Kansas, to Armour Institute, and to the Free Kindergarten Association Training Class of Chicago. Her work in that field was eclipsed, however, by her career as an author of books on nature study and biology for children. Morley╒s pioneering writings, many used as school texts at a time when nature study was beginning to be incorporated into many schools╒ curricula, included A Song of Life, 1891, Life and Love, 1895, Seed Babies, 1896, A Few Familiar Flowers, 1897, Flowers and their Friends, 1897, The Honey Makers, 1899, Bee People, 1899, Little Wanderers, 1899, Down North and Up Along, 1900, Wasps and their Ways, 1900, The Insect Folk, 1903, Little Mitchell, the Story of a Mountain Squirrel, 1904, Butterflies and Bees: the Insect Folk, Vol. II, 1905, The Renewal of Life; How and When to Tell the Story to the Young, for parents, 1906, Grasshopper Land, 1907, Donkey John of the Toy Valley, 1909, The Spark of Life; How Living Things Come into the World, as Told for Girls and Boys, 1913, The Carolina Mountains, 1913, Will-o╒-the Wasps, 1913, and The Apple-Tree Sprite, 1915.
